Coddiwomple:

“To travel in a purposeful manner towards a vague destination…”

That’s precisely what this year is about.

Two recent college graduates on a road to who knows where armed with love for each other and good intentions.

Our primary goal this year is to travel flexibly around the United States, and hopefully even the world, with the aid of Rotary, to volunteer and provide service wherever we can.

Evyn Batie:

I’m a 22 year old Rotarian from Loveland, Colorado and will be the primary author of this blog! I recently graduated Metropolitan State University of Denver having created my own degree in Integrative Culinary Services for At-Risk Populations through their Individualized Degree Program.

When I was 16, I attended a camp called Rocky Mountain Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RMRYLA) that changed my life. Through RYLA, I found Rotary which brought me mentors, friends, scholarships, and boosted my passion for changing the world. Ever since I attended, I saw how Rotary and service could create a unique pathway for my future. I’ve spent the last few years dreaming of a way to spend my gap year traveling with and participating in service through a lens of Rotary.

Following this gap year, I will be returning to school for a Master’s in Social Work with the goal of obtaining my therapy licensure. Eventually, I hope to work in the field of Culinary Therapy. I want to help reduce recidivism rates by aiding youth coming out of the Criminal Justice system and showing them skills necessary for a career path in the culinary arts.

My goal for this year is to learn as much as possible about myself, service, Rotary, and the world. I also hope the vague direction of this Coddiwomple will help teach me to be more flexible in my life.

I’ve also been blessed with a boyfriend who fully supports my dreams. He boldly decided to take on this gap year adventure with me rather than going back to our previous long distance relationship structure or letting me think even for a moment about changing my plans.

Evan Young:

Hi, I’m the boyfriend. I’m a 22 year old born and raised in Virginia Beach, Virginia. I attended school in Richmond at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). I earned a Bachelor’s in Forensic Science with a concentration in Physical Evidence and an accidental minor in Chemistry. I will be the primary photographer and social media manager for this blog.

Though this wasn’t originally something I planned for, Evyn’s passion is something I’ve always loved about her. It shown every time we talked about this idea and that passion made me want to be a part of this.

Through this Coddiwomple I hope to meet new people, make new connections, and make an impact wherever I can while seeing the country and/or the world on the way.

After this gap year, I plan to find a job in the Forensic Science field and make my impact there.
