Rotary Causes: World Water Day

The last few days have been fairly quiet for us. We have planned more details for our Blacksburg trip and potential next steps, I wrote a character reference letter for a friend, and we watched Evan’s cousin Marc coach two baseball games. We also had the opportunity to return to the Rotary Club of Virginia Beach Town Center and donate a photography package certificate courtesy of Evan’s mom for their upcoming silent auction.

Since not much has happened, I want to highlight another reason I love Rotary so much and that is the causes that drive us.

During the Rotary meeting today, we discussed World Water Day and the contributions of Rotary and of this particular club to that cause. “Providing clean water, sanitation, and hygiene” is one of seven of Rotary’s  causes that members contribute to and work towards in the world.

The speaker, Kenneth Brown, a member of the Town Center Club, educated us on how Rotary is working to help provide clean water locally, nationally, and internationally. He gave an honest view on the world water crises as well as discussing realistic solutions individuals can take on and how to help bring attention from larger companies and corporations to this issue. Mr. Brown also shared highlights from Rotary International’s website, providing an introduction to how Rotarians aid this cause.

We were especially fascinated to learn that some members of this particular club have been very active on this issue. They spoke on their work helping to build wells and water towers and helping to improve water access in communities in Africa through active participation in the initial installation and by providing tools that set the communities up for long term success.

Rotarian or not, I encourage everyone to take a look at this website for some hope and inspiration on good things being done in the world.
